Rory has taken his weight loss regime seriously! 😉
After the Doctor lost his precious mate River Song, I have decided to keep his last two sons, both look much like their mom. After much deliberation, I’ve decided to name them after yet another Doctor Who character! Alfie, known to himself as Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All, is a baby in an episode of Doctor Who. Cutest little kid. These two gerbils look almost identical, so they are now named after this adorable baby. Alfie & Stormy! 🙂
Maggie & Chleo, two pups from my first River Song litter, are enjoying living with their new mommy. 🙂
Sad update for my blog followers, my sweet girl River Song passed away last week. Most likely from complications with her pregnancy. Her current litter of four are doing well, they’ve been getting kitten formula from an eye dropper and are eating solids fairly well despite being so suddenly without Momma’s milk. They are gaining about a gram a day and so far aren’t showing any signs of ill health. Their dad is taking wonderful care of them despite looking a bit depressed.
River poses for a picture.
Rest in peace, sweet River Song.
Clara is getting her dark nose point!

Being that I’m the one running around with an “I *Heart* Gerbils” sticker on my truck, my manager at work asked me to adopt a gerbil who has severe bedding allergies today, and I said yes.
SO! Soon (probably not until this end of this month or later) I will be bringing home a nutmeg male gerbil who has bad damage to his nose and a bit of a temper after having been treated with meds for a while. But, I decided that I will attempt to pair him with Oliver, and thus won’t rehome Oliver once Henry is paired with Clara (I’m a gerbil match maker, apparently).
Not sure what I’ll name him yet, but I want to continue my British and/or Doctor Who theme. Any ideas?
Quick Note on Bedding Allergies
Though often misdiagnosed, bedding allergies are caused by excess dust and/or oils (such as cedar, pine and sometimes-though rarely- aspen), the symptoms are sneezing, itching of the nose/face, and loss of fur to the nose/face. Some gerbils are particularly sensitive to bedding, and have to be kept on special, nearly dust free bedding in order to heal their noses. Such as Oliver and this new guy I’ll be taking on. Oliver has permanent scarring to his nose and one of his ears from this, and this new guy will as well. He’s even rubbed his paws raw from it. Poor baby. Gerbils with allergy issues should not be bred, as this sensitivity to bedding will likely be passed on to their offspring.
Amy & Rory had their first litter last night between 9pm and midnight! Six healthy little beans! Very squeaky and bean-like! She’s being a very attentive mother and isn’t allowing me to take very good pictures of them, but I’ll share what I managed to get thus far:
Can’t see in the nest very well, but they’re all there!
One of the lighter skinned pups.
Already, just hours old, about half of the litter is much darker skinned! Hoping those will be dark burmese like their lovely mother. I’m expecting it to be half and half spot wise as well, since only one parent is spotted. But we will see as time progresses. So thrilled to see such a big, healthy litter!
The other pups are doing wonderfully, very mobile and precious. I will post a video later of them wandering around their tank.
The cutest thing in the world is watching a little baby gerbil try and chew on something. Oh my word. They are the sweetest.
Today my order of boxes arrived! Boxes, you say, boxes of what? Just boxes! Little critter boxes to send my gerbils to their new homes in. They’re very cute and just the right size for two young gerbils. I am pleased.
Here are some pictures of my gerbil clan playing in their play pen! A play pen is definitely worth purchasing! The bigger the better, as long as it says it is made for hamsters and gerbils. Some play pens are made just for guinea pigs and rabbits and the bar spacing is too wide, your gerbils could squeeze through and escape.
One little pup has shown it’s colors, looks like it will be a lot like Daddy! The rest will most likely be more like their mother, but we won’t know for sure until they get their fur.
Five healthy gerbil pups were born last night! They are much bigger than I had expected, all peeping and squirming and being adorable. ^_^ River Song is being a very good Momma and when The Doctor “stole” a pup, she went and retrieved it right away and tucked it back in with the others. So excited! Can’t wait to see who will have spots!
Also, I think it’s great that I literally cleaned their tank YESTERDAY. So these pups were born on the freshest bedding possible. That makes me extremely happy. And it’s much easier to see them on this white bedding. Success.
I’ve decided to make a Facebook page in hopes of getting the word out about my babies a little bit more! If you have a Facebook please like my new page! Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate my followers! You guys rock!
Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking breeding gerbils makes money. It is pretty much a money hole, but a thumpin’ fun one.
Today I finally acquired a piece of equipment I’ve been wanting for quite a while. A digital gram scale! This makes identifying pregnancy and keeping track of pup growth so much easier!
And now, for the weigh in!
Heavy weights:
Oliver is the top heavy weight at 80g!
Rory comes in a close second at 73g!
Henry brings up the rear at 71g!
Light weights:
Amy is the heaviest of the light weights at 67g!
The Doctor comes up second at 64g!
River brings up the rear at a modest 61g!
Now, River and Amy are sisters from the same litter, on the same diet, and were the same size when I introduced them to their mates. I can’t say for sure yet, but I think the whopping 6gram difference between the sisters means that Amy will be our first mother! I’ll know for sure in the next day or so, if I see a weight gain in her. Fingers crossed!
